Content Round-Up – August 8, 2025

This past week, I had the pleasure of visiting a farm that has been in my wife’s family for over 100 years, an official Oregon Century Farm.  We had a great time exploring many of the old outbuildings and finding a few treasures.

Old red barn on Oregon farm

My wife’s great-great-grandfather, the original owner, arrived in the U.S. from Sweden in 1882. He arrived with little money but with very hard work was able to buy the 80 acres land for the farm in 1889 and an additional parcel of 44 acres in 1894.

Imagine living in a time when that was even possible!

It’s certainly neat to have this historic farm still in the family but I am much more grateful for the family legacy of hard work, family, and faith that has been passed down through the generations. Strong character traits I see in my wife that were instill by her parents.

As parents, it is easy to focus on the financial provision for our kids and setting them up right to succeed financially. If you’re on Homeschool Steward reading this, I know you care about passing on a legacy of financial stewardship!

The farm visit reminded me again of the other godly legacies which we can pass down if we are intentional – legacies of hard work, entrepreneurialism, and more importantly, faith in Christ.

Now for the Content Round-up!

The Financial and Spiritual Principle of Compound Interest – Tim Challies

In a similar vein, Challies offers encouragement for early investing in our children’s spiritual development with the hope of a life of compounding growth.

“There is a call to parents here: Just as you may begin to save toward your children’s financial future when they are young, it is also wise to consider their spiritual future when they are young. Lessons learned when they are tiny do not easily fade but instead accumulate and bear fruit over a lifetime. So teach them well, train them well, and encourage them to make this faith their own. The first truths they learn are likely to be the last forgotten.”

Biblically Responsible Investing: What Does It Mean to Be a Good Investor? – Randy Alcorn

Alcorn highlights some of his past teaching about Biblically Responsible Investing, the intentional effort to align investment profits with biblical principles. (Something I care deeply about!) He also highlights a brand new book, The Good Investor, by Robin John, CEO of Eventide Asset Management. While I haven’t read this book yet, I am excited to! Robin John has a great personal story and the story of how Eventide got its start is a fantastic one.

Ask Chuck: America’s Debt Levels Are Spiraling – Chuck Bentley

America’s debt level and never-ending government spending spree is one of the scariest things nobody is talking about. Bentley offers wisdom on how to think and respond to America’s debt crisis and to make sure we are individually stewarding our own resources wisely.

Enjoy reading and have a great weekend!
